What Would Coach Colsey Do?

Dear Parents,

Thank you for the emails looking for some guidance on the Winter programming at A.LA.  Many of you have asked what you should do for your son/daughter based on their age.  Here is a quick guideline for what I would recommend for each grade level based on my experience:

Grades K-4: One training session a week, fun 3 v 3 session with half the time spent of fundamentals and half the time spent playing 3 v 3. Would also like to see these players participating in a second sport if possible! If a second session is desired, would focus on getting shooting reps...this is a great time to develop solid fundamentals!

Grades 5-6: Two training sessions a week. My choice would be the ELITE 90 minute blocks based on the athletic development associated with this program and the blend of skills and games. A second option would be one Elite 90 minute session and one PRO Shooting session per week. Again, playing a second sport is excellent for each player's overall athletic development.

Grades 7-9: The golden years! Two to three training sessions a week. My choice would be two ELITE 90 minute blocks based on the athletic development associated with this program and the blend of skills and games. A second option would be one Elite 90 minute session and one PRO Shooting session per week with a LAXFit 60 thrown in to add to their athleticism and endurance as they get ready for the Spring lacrosse season. Again, playing a second sport is excellent for each player's overall athletic development..it becomes increasingly difficult to play a Winter sport as the second sport but I would still recommend if possible.  THIS IS THE AGE TO FOCUS ON FINAL SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR HS LACROSSE. Make these years count by doing whatever you can to get the stick skills nailed down.  ALL HS Coaches are looking for players who enter HS with the skill set necessary to contribute right away. According to the college coaches I speak with, the athletic player who lacks great skills is the most common player in the game, and therefore the least valuable.  Develop the skills now...anytime and anywhere...doesn't have to be at A.L.A!

Grades 10-12: Spring season preparation! For this age group, I would like to see two LAXFit 60 sessions per week and an ELITE block or a PRO shooting session. These players should have the skills nailed down and should be looking to improve shooting, strength, endurance and athleticism before they step on the field for their HS season. Get this type of workout in any way possible.  Pick up basketball once a week is also a great option for an endurance workout that resembles lacrosse!
